Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul
HotButteredSoul.jpg

Somebody find me an album with only four tracks after the 70s, cos I really cannot think of any. And why would you like to put more than 4 when you can make something like "Hot Buttered Soul" in that exact amount of songs. Yes, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" takes nearly 19 minutes, and "Walk on By" is 12, so most record companies would have trouble now convincing radio stations to air songs that are over 3 minutes. The audience has been (mis)educated to listen only to simplified music, which does make a lot of sense in these days of "pay-per-song": the more songs you can pack in broadcast time, the more money you make out of it. I've always thought a record is more than a collection of songs, or at least good records are. Take Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On", for example. Even if you only like one or two tracks there, the experience of listening to it from beginning to end is just not the same as picking only the bits you like. If you do not buy chapters in a book, scenes in a movie, or parts of a painting, why should you get only a couple of songs in a record?

Having said this, let me also make clear that any of the songs present here are absolutey worth it. The Bar-Kays are behind the rythm section, and do they know how to do their work, those long instrumentals are just terrific. The album opens with "Walk on By", an incredible song for the time it was written. "Hyperbolicsyllabicsequedalymistic" is a powerful funk, followed by the more conventional but still beautiful ballad "One Woman". Having a special weakness for Hayes' theatrical (histrionic, some would say) style, my personal favorite in the album has always been "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", the perfect ending for one of the greatest soul albums. You gotta love a guy who makes a monologue like the one in this song and still takes himself seriously!

Snowboy Presents The Return Of The Hi-Hat: Essential Cuban, Brazilian Hard Bop + Fusion

I bought this compilation some 5 years ago at ウィンドミルレコード, a small shop in Tatemachi. I used to spend quite a lot of time there chatting with the owner, specially on those loooong Sundays I used to enjoy before becoming a VeryBusyPerson (tm). The shop is still there, and although they mainly sell DVDs, there are nice CDs and a small corner with records at discount prices (or at least they were).

Briefly speaking, this is THE album that introduced me to danceable jazz. Coming from a city (Sevilla) with no music scene at all, in a country (Spain) where people think Kenny G is a great jazz artist (???), I've always wondered how would it feel to go to a club where people would dance to real jazz. As explained in the linear notes, the tracks here compiled are regularly played at Snowboy's Jazz Dance sessions, which have become a bit of a legend among both dancers and jazz diggers.

This album drove me absolutely crazy for months, even recently I could listen to the whole of it without feeling that any of the songs are not worth being here. From the more jazz-oriented "Over The Moon", "Brazilian Suite No. 3" or "(Used To Be) Cha Cha", to the Cuban sounds of "Viento Frio", "Descarga Melao" and "Baila mi conga, vacilala", there is not a single second to let you take a breath and relax.

Special mention for my favorite track, Jon Lucien's "Black Flower". When you look for information about this guy, you will mostly find him associated to romantic ballads and soft-jazz. Well, listen to this song, then fall on your knees and pray, cos HE is the man. I have played this song so many times in my own events that probably people are fed up with it by now, and it's still a 100% guaranteed floor packer!!
Starting over...

So...given that everybody out there seems to be writing their own blogs, I guessed maybe I might have very important things to say as well! I'm still trying to figure out how things work out here at FC2, although so far everything seems pretty simple.

Basically I will try to keep updated information on my monthly event, "Raise your voice!", hold every 2nd Friday of the month at bar POOL, Kanazawa. On the meantime, I i'll be writting bits & pieces about albums I am currently listening to. Those who know me are pretty aware of my absolutely ダサい sense of music, so NO complains if I write about "Footlose" (which in fact, i intend to do...) (^_^)
